The Manhasset Historical Society is dedicated to spreading the history of Manhasset to future generations. We aspire to share the heritage and history of Manhasset through research, presentations, and images. Please join us on our journey to preserve our town’s heritage and, in turn, our town’s future.
Founding Members
Ryan Chung, Founder and President of the Manhasset Historical Society, is a history enthusiast and has been an active writer of historical research papers. He has been awarded the Clio Award for Creative Senior Historical Paper at the regional National History Day competition. He is editor-in-chief and writer for his school newspaper, Indian Ink, and serves as president of his school’s Social Studies Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society. He has been published in Teen Ink, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards’s The Best Teen Writing of 2014, Johns Hopkins’ Imagine Magazine, and Literary Manhattan. He was also chosen to be one of the fourteen 2016 Teen Scholars for the New-York Historical Society. His other passions include music, for which he attends the Juilliard Pre-College Program, and traveling.
Emily Cruz, Secretary and Events Officer of the Manhasset Historical Society, is an avid history lover. She is involved in multiple political and historical organizations. This includes being chosen for the Students Inside Albany Program, which gives young women an inside look on the political process. In school, Emily is involved in many activities, including being the secretary of Feminism Club, Communications Officer of English Honor Society, and Secretary of Mock Trial. In addition to her political pursuits, Emily has also trained in classical singing for 7 years, with her most recent achievement being selected for the All-Eastern Mixed Chorus.
Ryan Thorpe, Founding Member, Outreach and Communications Officer of the Manhasset Historical Society, is greatly interested by the study of global issues, like water scarcity. Along with his research partner, Ryan received the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize, rewarding his work in the engineering of devices to protect water. Ryan also has a keen passion for leading, as he is on the executive board for various student organizations at Manhasset. His other interests include cross country,track, and music.
Jeffrey Torborg, Founding Member, Op-Ed Editor, and Contributor to the Manhasset Historical Society, is an impassioned student of history and literature. Jeff is the President and Student Senate representative of the 1680 Club, an academic institution whose charter is the discussion of political and historical affairs, and is the Vice President of the Manhasset History and English Honor Societies. His work has earned the Dr. David Dorman Historical Essay Award, as granted by the Manhasset High School Social Studies Department, and has been nominated twice for the National Council of Teachers of English annual competition. This past summer, Jeff was admitted to the internship program of acting New York State Supreme Court Judge Kevin McGrath, and, selected as a delegate to the New York State American Legion’s Boys State convention, was appointed President of the Federalist Party Platform Committee and Chief Chairperson to the Commission on Economic Development. Jeffrey enjoys literature, ethics and aesthetics, music, and traveling.
