The large granite erratic that can be seen from the side of Shelter Rock road, is a piece of the geological history that is apparent within Manhasset. The Shelter Rock, is believed to have been deposited by glacial movement around 11,000 to 20,000 years ago, during the closing of the Pleistocene era. It’s size and weight are approximately 1,800 tons and 55 by 35 feet making it one of the largest glacial erratics on Long Island, and possibly in New York State. This glacial erratic was first known as the Milestone Rock, however the name was changed when the legends of its use as Shelter by various the name was changed to “Shelter Rock.” One of which legends include that of a young male, who was running away with a young Indian women, when he was pierced by an arrow and thus sought refuge at the Shelter Rock. Various Indian artifacts, thought to be from the Metticock tribe, include pottery, stone knives, and projectile points.
