The Manhasset Bay’s first residents were the Matinecook Tribe of the Algonquin Indians. Then, in around the 17th The Manhasset Bay was taken over by the Dutch. Due to the Dutch presence, the bay was called the Schout’s Bay. Then, due to the large presence of cows, it was remained Cow’s bay, only to be later called by it’s present name, the Manhasset Bay. It was only in the 1920s the industry began to switch to the cow-and-fish industry to the services for commercial boating. The bay is encompassed by Port Washington and Great Neck. This is the bay that is featured in the Great Gatsby.
